战后西方资本主义社会进入了一个新的历史时期，这个时期的资本主义被称为“晚期资本主义”。晚期资本主义在经济上的主要特征有：经济发展的垄断程度迅速提高，出现了从私人垄断、行业垄断逐渐走向国家垄断，并进一步发展到国际垄断；经济增长模式发生重大变化，逐渐重视虚拟资本的发展；新中产阶层扩大；第一、二产业地位相对下降，第三产业比重迅速上升；科技成了第一生产力,知识分子地位上升；经济发展不平衡日趋扩大。在政治上的主要特征有：国家政治结构日趋完善，资本主义政府、国家机关地位增强，对经济发展的干预加强；工人阶级队伍内部出现了一些新的变化，白领阶层人数上升，知识分子数量扩大，传统产业人数的比重下降；资本主义国家内执政党与在野党以及各派政治力量的斗争日趋复杂化、公开化和激烈化；发达资本主义国家在国际上加强对其它国家政治、军事的干预、对全球的政治控制；资本主义国家政治上的虚伪性、欺骗性日益显露。在文化上的主要特征有：商业文化、消费文化迅速发展，文化已成为商品；文化内容、文化形式更加趋于多元化；文化变化周期缩短，变化速率加快；文化在内容、形式、风格等方面的发展明显地呈现出从现实主义走向现代主义并进一步走向后现代主义的趋势；伴随着文化交流的加强，发达国家之间以及发达国家对第三世界国家的文化渗透，文化侵略日趋强化（卢海峰，2000：2）。尤尔根哈贝马斯认为晚期资本主义是一种新的社会形态，其特有的危机趋势有经济危机、政治危机和意识形态危机。晚期资本主义陷入危机的最根本原因在于系统控制了生活世界，生活世界殖民化。恢复、重塑生活世界的本来面目，促成单向度的工具理性社会向全面发展的交往理性社会的成功转向，是化解和消除晚期资本主义危机的唯一出路（于凤春，2006：2）。晚期资本主义这一概念也在一定程度上反映了当代整个时代的特征，具有一定的世界意义。
