定义

艺术创作中，艺术家舍弃客观实物的具体形状，仅提取某些形式因素加以组合来创造形象、表情达意的方式和过程。它与“具象化”相对。该词来源于拉丁语abstractio，有抽取、离开之意。从原始艺术起抽象化就被普遍运用。抽象化的途径一是从物象的模拟即“具象”演化、发展而来，将物象简化、提炼为抽象图形，如西安半坡出土陶器中的几何图案由模拟动物具象演化而来;二是将对生活中形式美的感受直接物化为抽象图形，不经过从象形开始的演化。抽象化在艺术中的运用有三种情况：（1）某些艺术门类、样式，主要以抽象化的方式来创作，如建筑艺术，音乐中的大部分器乐，工艺美术中的几何图案，书法艺术等；（2）在现代派尤其是抽象主义艺术中，把抽象化当作主要的美学原则，赋予抽象以象征意义，将象征的对象规定为“我”的内在的心理或精神；（3）作为一种抽象因素与具象结合。如中国画中独特的点与线的形式结构有相对独立的审美价值，在具体作品中又以物象的轮廓为支架形成特殊的风格。抽象化可以创造出抽象美，产生使人联想、体味的效果（金炳华，2003：634）。
