定义

必然性，与偶然性相对，在哲学上是指由事物本质因素所决定的确定不移的联系和发展中合乎规律的、唯一可能的趋势。必然性是事物发展客观规律的体现，决定着事物发展的前途和方向。认识必然性即认识事物发展的客观规律，这对于指导社会实践有重要意义。必然性和偶然性最早由古希腊哲学家德谟克利特阐述，旧唯物主义者往往肯定客观必然性的存在，却否定偶然性。黑格尔较系统地论述了必然性与偶然性的辩证关系，但将其视为客观精神的产物。辩证唯物主义揭示了必然性与偶然性的对立统一，认为没有纯粹的必然性，在事物的发展过程中，必然性和偶然性是相互联系、交互作用的，且在一定条件下相互转化。必然性由事物内在矛盾所决定，居于支配地位，它通过大量的偶然性表现出来，并为自己开辟道路，而偶然性则是必然性的表现形式和补充。在实践活动中，忽视偶然性的研究则不能认识必然性。要求我们既要善于从偶然的现象中揭示出客观事物发展过程内部潜在着的必然的规律性，并以此指导人们的行动；又要对各种偶然性做出充分的分析，善于利用有利的偶然因素，避免有害的偶然因素，来促进事物的顺利发展。割裂必然性与偶然性的辩证关系，只承认必然性而否认偶然性，就会导致机械决定论和宿命论；而只承认偶然性，否认必然性，就会导致唯心主义的非决定论，二者都是错误的（金炳华，2003：267）。
