德国社会民主党是德国现存的最古老政党，也是世界上最古老，最大的政党之一。德国社会民主党简称社民党，前身为1863年5月23日于莱比锡创立的全德工人联合会。1869年8月，社会民主工人党成立。1875年5月前两者合并为社会主义工人党，并于1891年10月更名为德国社会民主党。1878-1890年间遭俾斯麦禁止，一次大战期间则严重分裂。至二战时则转为地下组织。二战后德国西占区与柏林之社会民主党代表于汉诺威召开党代表大会，宣布重建社民党，并沿用1925年以马克思主义为导向的海德堡纲领。1959年制定哥德斯堡纲领，扬弃了马克思主义，改为主张社会市场经济。1966年，社民党与基民盟合组大联合政府。一直到1969年联邦众议院大选才与自由民主党结盟击败基民/基社盟首度取得执政权，由勃兰特（Willy Brandt）出任总理。1982年基民联盟再度对社会民主党籍总理施密特（Helmut Schmidt）提出建设性不信任案，施密特因此下台，基民盟科尔获选为新任联邦总理。1998年社会民主党与绿党结盟，击败了持续执政17年的基民盟，施罗德（Gerhard Schroder）出任联邦总理；至2005年社会民主党接连在各邦议会选举失利，施罗德向联邦众议院提出信任案未通过，宣布解散议会重新选举。重新选举后以些微差距败给基民盟，经协商后与基民/基社盟共组大联合政府。 1869年,奥古斯特倍倍尔和威廉李卜克内西（爱森纳赫派）创立德国社会民主工党（SDAP），并在1875年5月两党在马克思的调和下，合并拉萨尔派的全德工人联合会合(ADAV)，完成整合成为今天的社民党。因为德国社会民主党赞成革命反对君主立宪，俾斯麦宣布该党非法，但是1892年又被恢复合法地位（via：http://baike.baidu.com/link?url=SpECBHoKtciFNmBAxN6u9-ARWnM02HRabqPh7Um4Oq5zcgkubTyczswvA3Aw6Ogtohk3-eQ55Fo0YLDAuyCL4K）。德国社会民主党把社会正义作为它的一个主要政见。经济应该发展，利益应该公平分配，因此公民才能更好的享受社会福利。同时，德国社会民主党认为一个强大而重视社会福利的国家才能保护弱势群体的权利，一个充分满足下一代需要的财政政策也是非常必要。为了能够实现这个目标，为了不同的人群能够获利，德国社会民主党提出了新改革议题，如新的富人税政策等。在社会政治上，德国社会民主党致力于民法，开放式社会和公民参政上，它们是自由，正义和团结的基石。在国际政策上，德国社会民主党采取了比较积极的欧洲一体化和对外政策。
