定义
“否定神学主张以否定的语言形式表达对神的认识的理论。首先在《伪狄奥尼西》中提出。反对神学以《圣经》为依据及人对上帝的肯定性质的了解是受上帝的启示等观点，认为肯定神学对上帝性质的肯定表述，应当改用否定表达。人并不能理解上帝，肯定表述限制了上帝的无限属性，否定表述则从反面说明上帝属性的无限。否定神学把上帝看成超越的存在、统一和善，是一种超越神学。否定表述可以表明人对神的不能理解的无知，表明人的有限知识和达到最高知识的层次。这种无知的神学也称为神秘神学。否定神学的思想称为中世纪和文艺复兴时期的神秘主义的思想来源之一，也称为以后的辩证法的思想来源之一”（冯契，徐孝通，2000：389）。
也有学者提出对于“否定神学”思想更为清晰的表达见于《狄奥尼修书》的首篇《神名论》。神名是上帝之名。作者认为上帝的大能非人类所能理解，因此上帝之名不可名。但上帝普惠大地，世间万物莫不沐浴了圣灵，故万物之名，也就是上帝之名。“否定神学”就是通过描述“对象不是什么，来显示对象是什么的演说方式，针锋相对的是殚精竭虑，从自然哲学和基督天启双管齐下，来正面阐释上帝的‘肯定神学’的传统”（陆扬。2012：28）。否定神学和肯定神学一样不可或缺。否定神学的表述使上帝称为无限的上帝。
