定义

宗教史学从各种宗教所经历的历史发展来认识宗教本身，探讨各种宗教的史实、历史发展线索。它以历史描述为主，是宗教学分支的基础，与历史学、语言学、考古学紧密联系。宗教史学的研究一般还与人类文化史、艺术史、政治史、民族史、经济史、思想史等的研究相结合（徐志明，1995：362）。宗教史学有广义与狭义之分。广义指宗教学或比较宗教学。狭义指研究宗教的起源、发展及其性质的学科。19世纪下半叶出现，当时曾被用作宗教学和比较宗教学的同义语。狭义侧重于纵向比较研究，对宗教在整体发展上作出描述和说明（金炳华，2003：701）。宗教史学也是法国、比利时、荷兰等国的学者对早期宗教学的称谓。荷兰宗教学者商特皮1887年出版的《宗教史学教科书》是宗教史学最早的著作。他注重对各种不同宗教的专史研究，在时间上对宗教进行纵的历史性研究的同时，也对各种宗教现象进行分类研究，以求逼真地理解历史上的宗教力量。“国际宗教史大会”(后改为“国际宗教史协会”)，其前任会长、英国学者夏普著有《比较宗教学史》一书（蒋广学等，1990：58）。宗教史学的任务是探讨、研究各种宗教的史实，勾勒其历史发展的线索。宗教史学是宗教研究上历史的描述、语言的探究、考古的实践。在这种意义上它依赖于宗教古语学、宗教考古学等工具学科（宗教史学.via：
