“蚕食”一词，一直为史家所沿用，它贴切生动地概括了强秦逐渐灭亡六国的历史情景。比喻如蚕吃桑叶那样一点一点的吃掉，比喻逐步侵占。语出《战国策.赵策一》：“秦蚕食韩氏之地。”日军在侵华战争中就进行了大规模的“蚕食”（蚕食.via:

1941年3月30日至1942年12月10日，华北伪政权在华北连续推行了5次“治安强化运动”。“蚕食”是日军“强化治安运动”的重要组成部分和“总力战”方针的具体化，分为边缘区蚕食和跃进蚕食两种方式：边缘式蚕食，就是日伪军依托其占领区和所控制的交通线，向游击区或根据地压缩推进，逐步扩大敌占区的行动；跃进蚕食，就是日伪军在“扫荡”抗日根据地占领的地区内，建立伪政权和伪武装，使之变成游击区或敌占区。日伪军在蚕食时通常采用准备、实施、巩固三个步骤。先是派出便衣武装进至预先选择好的离据点15至20公里的地区，利用流氓、土匪及抗日政权的不满分子或动摇分子，秘密开展特务工作与建立特务组织，暗中成立维持会，形成日伪秘密控制的电线。然后主力进入，公开成立维持会。最后，建立各级伪政权，使游击区或根据地一块一块地变成敌占区。“蚕食”的特点与大规模的“扫荡”明显不同，由于它是以一种较缓和的、隐蔽的、波浪式推进的方式侵占游击区或根据地，容易使根据地军民忽视其严重性与危害性；但事实上，“蚕食”对根据地具有极大的危害性，甚至危及到根据地的巩固与支持（孙立华，2005：30）。
