定义

德国唯心主义哲学家黑格尔《历史哲学》中的基本概念。世界精神亦称“宇宙精神”。在《历史哲学》中他认为：“整个世界的最后的目的，我们都当作是‘精神’方面对于它自己的自由的意识，而事实上，也就是当作那种自由的现实”，“世界历史无非是‘自由’意识的进展”（黑格尔，2001：19）。黑格尔认为世界精神构成了历史本质，构成了世界历史发展的基础，世界历史的发展过程是世界精神展现自身、实现自身、认识自身的过程。自由是世界精神的唯一真理，世界精神在具体的历史形态中追求自由、产生自由并实现自由，世界历史就是世界精神借助世界历史个人、个人的热情、民族精神及时代精神、国家、地理环境等手段和工具实现自己自由的历史（蒋永福等，2000：714）。黑格尔认为“绝对精神”是世界的主宰。黑格尔认为世界历史是专门从事于表现精神怎样逐渐达到自在自为的真理的，“世界历史是‘精神’在各种最高形态里的神圣的、绝对的过程的表现”，黑格尔宣称，在每一历史时代里，世界精神只选择一个民族来实现自己的目的，作为那一时代世界精神的“承担者”。黑格尔认为，世界精神在其发展中经历了几个历史阶段，开始体现在东方人身上，但这时只有一个人（法老、帝王）是自由的。继之，世界精神又体现在希腊、罗马人中间，但也只是少数人（奴隶主）是自由的，而不是人人都是自由的。最后，世界精神转向日尔曼民族，在基督教的影响下，所有的人都意识到了自由，达到了世界历史的最高阶段。可见，世界精神以地理环境作为其表演场所和达到其自由的必要基础，实现其自身的自由。因此，世界精神是能动的，是世界历史发展的主导力量，它自己回复到自己，自己实现自己，自己铸造自己，它构成世界历史的最终目的。世界历史的具体进程体现出世界精神对自由意识的追求，世界精神构成了世界历史发展的经线，并保障世界历史的合理的和必然的路线，而世界精神在世界历史的具体进程中其本性始终保持着自我同一性。黑格尔把世界历史看作世界精神实现自由的历史，这就摈弃了把历史看作是杂乱无章的偶然事件的堆积和谬误的陈列场所的错误见解（蒋永福等，2000：714）。加拿大著名哲学家查尔斯·泰勒认为：“黑格尔在《历史哲学》中包含的观念，体现了当时欧洲的历史和思想的转折对他产生的影响”（查尔斯·泰勒，2002：653）。在一定意义上黑格尔揭示了历史发展是有规律可循的，从而把历史研究提高到历史辩证法的新水平。但把“世界精神”看作是第一性的东西，则是唯心主义的。
