定义

功能这一概念源于物理学，现代哲学中的功能范畴主要是从自然科学演化而来的，是现代科学和实践条件下形成的一个新范畴（褚凤英，2005：112）。功能与结构相对，指有特定结构的事物或系统在内部和外部的联系和关系中表现出来的特性和能力。任何物质系统都是结构与功能的统一。结构是功能的基础，结构决定功能；功能是结构的表现，功能对结构又有反作用。结构是内在的相对稳定的，功能则是外在的多变的。世界上没有无功能的结构，也没有无结构的功能。系统的功能取决于系统的结构和要素，组成系统结构的要素不同，系统的功能不相同；组成系统的要素相同但结构不同，功能也不相同。化学中的同分异构体，如金刚石和石墨，虽然都是由碳原子组成，但碳原子的结合方式即结构不同，它们的性质也迥然不同。结构和功能的联系是复杂的，往往具有多种形式。一种是同构同功，即相同的结构表现相同的功能；另一种异构同功，即不同的结构表现着相同的或类似的功能；再一种是同构异功，即同一种结构实现着多种不同的功能。功能也具有层次性，不同层次的结构具有不同的功能，如一个大企业系统的整体功能不同于这个企业下面每个工厂的功能，也不同于厂下面的车间、班组等层次的功能。人们研究物质系统的结构和功能，既可根据已知对象的内部结构，来推测和预见对象的功能；也可根据已知对象的功能，来推测和预见对象的结构，从而实现人们对自然界的充分利用和改造（金炳华等，2001：448）。
