1.向后移动或使之向后移动，跟“进”相反 move back; retreat, opposite to jìn：～兵 tuìbīng repulse the enemy/ 败～ bàituì be defeated; retreat/ 敌人已经～了 Dírén yǐjing tuì le. The enemy has retreated. ［退步 -bù］1.逐渐向下，落后 lag behind; retrogress：工作积极，学习努力，才能不～～ Gōngzuò jījí, xuéxí nǔlì, cái néng bù tuìbù. One will not fall behind if he works actively and studies diligently. 2.后退的地步 room for manoeuvre; leeway：话没有说死，留了～～ Huà méiyǒu shuōsǐ, liúle tuìbù. say sth. flexibly, leaving some leeway ［退化 -huà］生物体的某一或某些器官在进化过程中，全然消失或部分残留而成为痕迹器官的现象。例如人的阑尾是退化器官 degeneration, the phenomenon of one or some organs of living beings disappearing or passing from a higher to a lower condition in the course of evolution. The appendix of man is such an organ.
2.离开，辞去 quit; leave：～席 tuìxí leave a banquet or a meeting/ ～职 tuìzhí resign or be discharged from office; quit working
3.送还，不接受，撤销 return; cancel：～货 tuìhuò return goods/ ～票 tuìpiào return a ticket; get a refund for a ticket/ ～钱 tuìqián refund
