定义

质，一事物区别于它事物的内在规定性。与“量”相对。古希腊亚里士多德认为质是事物的本质，“现在所称‘是’的事物，其本义是指‘这个’，其别义指量，又指质。”又认为质决定事物的存在。英国洛克把物体的性质分为两类，即“第一性的质”和“第二性的质”。他认为第一性的质是指物体的“体积、广裹、形相、可动性等等”，它们是物体本身所固有的，第二性的质是“颜色、声音、滋味等等”，它们并不是物体本身所固有的。贝克莱则利用洛克第二性的质的观点，进而把第一性的质说成是主观的，以此来论证主观唯心主义。德国黑格尔从客观唯心主义立场对质下了定义:“质是与存同一的直接的规定性，··一某物之所以是某物，乃由于质，如失掉其质，便会停止其为某物。”但他把“质”看成是“绝对观念”外化的一个环节。辩证唯物主义认为，质是事物的本质属性或内在规定性，是由事物内部矛盾的特殊性决定的。它把该事物、现象和过程同所有其他的东西区别开来，并使这种区别具有明显的确定性和稳定性。列宁指出:“质是规定性、自为的规定性……”(《列宁全集》第55卷第97页)质和事物的存在是直接同一的，不可分的，恩格斯说:“存在着的不是质，而只是具有质并且具有无限多的质的物。(马克思恩格斯选集》第4卷第339页)事物消失同时就是它的质的消失，这一事物就变成另一事物。事物质通过事物的属性表现出来并为人们所认识，但质又不等同于属性。同一种质，在不同条件下，在与不同的事物发生联系时，可以表现出不同的属性:现代系统理论将事物分为三种不同的质，即自然(物质结构)的质、功能的质和系统的质。系统质是总合的或整体的质。并不简单是构成事物各要素和特性的总和，而是它们整体性和完整性的体现。事物具有许多质的规定性，只有通过对客体所具有的多质进行系统性的研究，才能得到合理的解释。正确地认识事物的质，是人们认识事物的基础。要对质进行具体分析，区别主要的质和次要的质，着重于把握主要的质，也不忽视次要的质。任何事物都是质和量的统一。只有全面地把握事物的质和量的关系，才能正确认识事物。质和本质是既相联系又有区别的两个范畴。本质比质更深刻，质比本质更为丰富和多样。（金炳华，2003：257）
