定义
原指欧洲殖民者在热带或亚热带的殖民地和半殖民地建立的种植经济作物的大型农场。如殖民地时代古巴的甘蔗种植园，危地马拉的咖啡种植园，美国的棉花种植园，锡兰(今斯里兰卡，下同)的橡胶种植园等。殖民者的种植园一般只种一种经济作物以供出口，使用廉价的奴隶或契约劳工，进行残酷的压迫和剥削，对自然资源实行掠夺式经营，牟取暴利。殖民地和半殖民地国家获得独立以后，许多种植园虽转为国有或转给民族资本家经营，有的国家还新开垦了许多特种经济作物农场，但大都沿用种植园的名称（中国农业百科全书编辑部，1991：468-469）。
种植园主为了保证产出，借用古代奴隶制手段，支配奴隶在种植园中工作，奴隶不能自由支配其劳动，但是“雇佣关系”在其中已经有所体现。尽管如此，多数人还是认为这不是资本主义发展的常态，而是一种变态。其本质上会阻碍资本主义的发展。
最早出现于18世纪的拉丁美洲，随着欧洲殖民者在拉美建立种植园供应欧洲和美洲市场，其对劳动力的需求也日益扩大，黑奴贸易为种植园经济的发展壮大提供基础，可以说整个19世纪，种植园经济为世界经济的发展做出了贡献，特别是为欧洲资本主义的发展积累了丰富的原始资本。而后随着拉美地区的民族解放运动，种植园经济逐步瓦解。美国南北战争的结束，标志着黑奴制度的废除，种植园经济也随之消失。
种植园经济为资本主义发展做出了贡献，但其本质上不利于劳动力的流动，不能提供市场以及与资产阶级“自由”观点相违背等弊端决定，种植园经济必将是一种与经济潮流相违背的经济组织形态。
