Ganzhou (Zhangye Prefecture)

定义

州名。在敦煌东南一千二百里。汉元鼎六年（前111）分武威地置张掖郡，以断匈奴右臂，意为自张其掖。

Ganzhou (Zhangye Prefecture): nearly 1200 li (773 km) southeast of Dunhuang, Ganzhou was separated from Wuwei Prefecture in the sixth year of the Yuanding reign during the Han Dynasty (111 BC) as part of the scheme to push back the nomadic Xiongnu. It was also called Zhangye (Extend the Arm) as an abbreviation of zizhang qiye (“extending the arms to the countries to the Western Regions”).
