定义

旨在从人们的购买行为推测人们的偏好。在通常的消费者理论中，偏好(或效用函数)起着中心的作用，但它是与人们内心活动有关的心理概念，故往往被认为这是通常消费者理论的缺点。在20世纪40年代，P.A.萨缪尔森(Samuelson)提出显示偏好理论，从实际观察到消费者在不同价格下作出的选择，不用偏好(或效用函数)的概念，可以推断出消费者的无差异曲线及需求函数的一些重要性质（胡代光等,2000:215-216）。
显示偏好理论在萨缪尔森、霍萨克以后得到了许多学者的发展。对显示偏好理论的许多运用支持了萨缪尔森最初的观点：显示偏好能够提供作为消费者行为理论基础的偏好理论，显示偏好的分析技术被用于证明竞争均衡的存在及其稳定性，证明希克斯复合商品定理。分析是超额需求函数的性质等等。显示偏好理论为传统的效用分析开辟了一个新的领域（刘伟等，1994：550）。
