定义

五四运动前，中国面临着内忧外患，先进的知识分子要求改变中国现状，而旧文化、旧思想又严重地阻碍着中华民族的觉醒。以陈独秀、李大钊为代表的先进知识分子，致力于唤醒民众、挽救民族危亡的工作，发起了思想启蒙运动，即新文化运动。1915年9月，陈独秀在上海创办《青年杂志》（1916年第二卷第一号改名《新青年》），就是这场运动兴起的标志。新文化运动的主要内容，是提倡民主政治，反对封建专制政治和封建旧礼教、旧道德；提倡科学，反对迷信、独断和封建哲学；主张文学革命，提倡白话文，反对文言文，提倡新文学，反对旧文学。《新青年》从第一卷起，就对封建政治进行抨击，发表了陈独秀的《敬告青年》，号召思想革新。针对当时出现的尊孔复古逆流，陈独秀、李大钊、吴虞等激烈地抨击孔教。曾在美国留学的胡适也积极参加文学革命并于1917年1月在《新青年》发表《文学改良刍议》一文，在文化界引起强烈反响。俄国十月革命后，新文化运动有了新的发展。《新青年》从1918年5月起，完全改用白话文，并发表了鲁迅的小说《狂人日记》，对吃人的封建制度进行深刻的揭露。同年底，陈独秀、李大钊创办了《每周评论》直接配合当时的政治斗争，抨击军阀政府，揭露帝国主义的侵略，显示了新文化运动由着重进行思想启蒙运动，发展到直接与政治斗争紧密结合。可见，“新文化运动非单纯探讨学术，而更注重探寻新的救亡之道，因此他们并未照搬西方思想，甚至也未专注于透彻理解西方理论，仅拣择其基本观点中的可用成分，与中国固有思想相结合，针对当时中国急需解决的现实问题而加以运用。”（陈廷湘，2015）新文化运动在中国近代史上，是一次思想启蒙和思想解放运动，启发了中国人民的民主觉悟，激发了人们追求真理的热情，客观上为马列主义的传播创造了有利条件。“五四”以后，新文化运动即转变为以传播马克思主义和介绍俄国十月革命为中心的新的思想运动。
