在古敦煌郡，晋昌郡（瓜、沙二州）就岩镌凿之佛教石窟寺，位于今甘肃省敦煌市境内。是敦煌莫高窟、西千佛洞，安西榆林窟、东千佛洞、水峡口下洞子石窟，肃北五个庙石窟、一个庙石窟，玉门昌马石窟之总称。世以莫高、云冈、龙门为中国之三大石窟。

They are Buddhist grottoes cut and dug in the rocks in the ancient Prefecture of Dunhuang and the Prefecture of Jinchang (present-day Guazhou and Shazhou). They are in Dunhuang, Gansu Province today. The term is used to refer collectively to all the grottoes in Dunhuang, including the Mogao Grottoes and the West Thousand Buddha Caves in the City of Dunhuang, the Yulin Grottoes, the East Thousand Buddha Caves and the Shuixiakou Lower Caves in Anxi, the Five-Temple Grottoes and the One Temple Grottoes in Subei and the Changma Grottoes in Yumen. The Mogao Grottoes, the Yungang Grottoes and the Longmen Grottoes are the three largest grottoes in China.
