《火星报》是列宁创办和领导的第一份全俄马克思主义的政治报纸。1900年12月24日在德国莱比锡创刊。先后在慕尼黑、伦敦、日内瓦出版。当时的编辑部由列宁、普列汉诺夫、马尔托夫、阿克雪里罗得、查苏利奇等组成。报纸对形形色色的机会主义，特别是对“经济派”进行了集中的批判。列宁在报纸上共发表了五十多篇论文，如《我们的迫切任务》、《从何着手》、《中国的战争》、《怎么办?》等。在第二十一期上登载了在列宁领导下草拟的党纲草案，为1903年胜利召开的俄国社会民主工党第二次代表大会作了理论上的准备。后因普列汉诺夫等人转到孟什维克立场，列宁于1903年11月1日退出编辑部，从此火星报变成了孟什维克的机关报(从52期起)，出版至1905年(112期)。历史上把列宁领导的马克思主义的《火星报》称为旧火星报，把孟什维克领导的机会主义的《火星报》称为新火星报。（金炳华等，2001：574）
