布洛赫是20世纪重要的哲学家之一，西方马克思主义的第一代主要代表人物之一（吴晓明，2008：126）。布洛赫毕业于慕尼黑符茨堡大学，1908年获哲学博士学位。1933年流亡国外，先后前往瑞士、美国，1948年返回德意志民主共和国，担任莱比锡大学教授、哲学研究所所长，被选德意志民主共和国科学院院士，后被批判并撤职。1961年布洛赫移居德意志联邦共和国，担任图宾根大学教授（《新编哲学大辞典》编委会，1991：212）。“布洛赫最重要的理论是他的乌托邦精神和希望哲学，他也是在这样的基础上看待马克思主义的。他认为，马克思主义提供出无阶级的、自由的、非异化的、完美的未来社会以及创造这种完美未来的意志，因此马克思主义是一种希望的行动。他认为资本主义压迫下的工人是社会主义乌托邦的预言者。人类的生存取决于他们能否成功地夺取生产资料，并在基于合作、平等的社会中实现人的本质”（吴晓明，2008：126）。他的主要著作有《希望的原理》、《理解与希望》、《乌托邦精神》、《马克思主义的修币》等（余源培，2009：464）。
