The story is based on the Sutra of the Heavenly Venerated One of the Parable of King Asoka, the third volume of Treatise on the Differentiations of Buddhist Virtues (Fengbie Gongde Lun) and the reference to Parable Scriptures in Vol. 71 of Forest of Gems in the Garden of Dharma (Fayuan Zhulin). |
