劳动二重性，指的是生产商品的劳动具有具体劳动和抽象劳动二重属性。具体劳动是指生产目的、操作方式、劳动对象、劳动手段和生产结果都各不相同的劳动。具体劳动的基本特征是“各不相同”，具体劳动有质的差别，不同质的具体劳动生产出不同质的产品，用来满足人们的不同需要。抽象劳动是人类劳动力在纯生理学意义上的耗费——人的大脑、肌肉、神经、手等的体力与脑力方面的生产性耗费，它是没有任何质的区别的一般人类劳动。抽象劳动的基本特征是“撇开具体形态的一般的无差别”。马克思认为商品二因素，是由生产商品的劳动二重性决定的。千差万别、满足某种需要的使用价值，由各种各样的具体劳动创造出来，具体劳动创造商品的使用价值。抽象劳动形成商品的价值，使得各种商品可以进行比较、交换。马克思同时指出，劳动二重性源于商品生产的社会条件。商品生产的出现，是因为具备了社会分工和生产资料私有制这样两个条件。由于社会分工，商品生产者之间的联系非常紧密，每个商品生产者的劳动都成为社会总劳动的一部分，这样，他的劳动就取得了社会劳动的性质。同时由于私有制的存在，劳动是商品生产者私人的事情，劳动成果也归私人所有，于是劳动就具有私人劳动的性质。私人劳动和社会劳动的矛盾决定了生产商品的劳动具有具体劳动和抽象劳动双重性质（张锰，2008：75）。马克思创立的劳动二重性学说，它使资产阶级古典政治经济学家亚当·斯密和大卫·李嘉图等人提出的劳动价值论成为完整科学的价值理论。
