在封建社会里，我国农民运动主要表现为农民千百次地起来进行斗争，包括拿起武器进行反抗地主阶级统治的农民革命战争；新民主主义革命时期，我国农民在工人阶级先锋队中国共产党的领导下，积极进行土地革命，开展武装斗争，终于以革命的武装打垮了反革命的武装，建立了中华人民共和国；解放后，我国广大农民在中国共产党的领导下开展了土地改革运动，彻底摧毁了封建主义的土地关系。1956年又开展了农业合作化运动，从此，我国农民走上了集体化的社会主义康庄大道；在社会主义建设时期，我国农民阶级与工人阶级结成了新的联盟，在社会主义革命和社会主义建设中互相支援。在建设“四个现代化”的新的历史时期，我国农民在中国共产党的正确领导下，正在为提高农业生产力而努力奋斗（李健华等，1984：188）。现代农民运动史可划分为三个阶段：第一阶段，从1920年上海共产党发起组成立到1923年底，这是中国现代农民运动的发生和早期发展阶段；第二阶段，从1924年1月国共合作、革命统一战线的建立，到北伐战争开始之前，是以广东为中心的农民运动发展阶段；第三阶段，从1926年7月广州国民革命军出师北伐，到1927年大革命的失败，是以湖南为重心的农村大革命阶段（王全营等，1989：1-2）。毛泽东在大革命时期对农民运动做出了伟大贡献。申国昌等人指出，毛泽东是中国共产党最早重视并领导农民运动的领导人之一。早在一九二三年年初,毛泽东就在湖南衡山县的岳北一带开始领导农民运动。到1923年9月在白果召开了岳北农工会成立大会，不久会员发展到十万余人。大革命时期毛泽东领导的农民运动可分为三个阶段：第一阶段领导湖南农民运动，农民协会会员猛增到四十万人之多，为北伐战争爆发后湖南迅速成为全国农民运动开展最力的地区从而创造了作为全国农民运动中心的条件；第二阶段主办第六届广东农民运动讲习所；第三阶段领导以湖南为中心的全国农民运动（申国昌等，1994：14-15）。同时，毛泽东对农民运动也作出了突出的理论贡献，提出了农民阶级是无产阶级最广大最忠实的同盟军的理论、写出了《湖南农民运动考察报告》——中国共产党领导农民运动的经典文献等等。
