人格唯心主义可以从两方面来理解：其一，美国霍伊森在《进化的局限性》一书的序言中提出了人格唯心主义的基本观点（涂纪亮，2007：11）。人格唯心主义是霍伊森对其哲学体系的称谓。他认为世界是精神的、多元的，它有目的地发展，而上帝作为世界发展过程的原因和目的，是控制世界的人格力量。霍伊森认为世界是在上帝人格统率之下的目的论系统（冯契，2001：1168）。霍伊森认为他所倡导的人格唯心主义，既不同于非人格的、一元论的唯心主义，也不同于进化论的自然主义，因为这两者都与人格所体验的道德自由相背离（涂纪亮，2007：13）。其二，人格唯心主义也是美国拉席德尔对其哲学体系的称谓。他认为心灵是独立的，而物质依赖于心灵，把心灵作为人格而控制整个世界。拉席德尔认为只有形而上学才可以保证道德判断的终极真实性，而人格唯心主义只是提供这种保证的最好的哲学体系（冯契，2001：1168）。
