定义

第一性的质，与第二性的质相对，指物体的形状、体积、广延、运动或静止、组织形式、数量等性质。而第二性的质指的是物体借第一性质的不同变化而产生的各种能力，这些能力作用于我们人类的感官，就产生各种颜色、声音、香味、冷热、硬软等观念和感觉。这种区分有很长的历史，早在古希腊时期，原子论者就已经区别了原子固有的性质和由人们的“约定”而产生的可感性质，后来的哲学家如伽利略、笛卡尔、霍布斯、波义耳都区分了两种性质。但是，把这个理论发扬光大的是英国的哲学家洛克，他超越了以前的哲学家，从认识论的角度考量，他认为，客体是由属性构成的，属性的不同搭配造成了事物之间的差别。按主观和客观的关系，观念又可被分为第一性的质和第二性的质的观念（江雨，2011：46）。洛克认为，第一性的质是物体实在的性质，是客观的。首先，第一性的质是物体本身固有的性质，不能与物体分开，无论物体发生何种形式的变化，第一性质不变；其次，主体认识与第一性的质之间是反映和被反映的关系，同时也是摹本和原型的关系。
