A Mahāyāna Sūtra. It was important in the development of the cult surrounding worship of the Buddha Amitabha. The sutra tells the story of a king who was inspired to achieve enlightenment and who received a prophecy that he would reborn in the Pure Land. The sutra is important in the Pure Land schools because it lists the fifty-one vows of the Buddha Amitabha, indicating that they were closely aligned with the teachings of Sukhavativyuhastru.
