1.放在动词或形容词后，表示动作或变化已经完成 used after a verb or an adjective to indicate the completion of an action or a change：买～一本书 mǎile yī běn shū have bought a book/ 水位低～两尺 Shuǐwèi dīle liǎng chǐ. The water-level is two chǐ lower.
2.用在句子末尾或句中停顿的地方，表示变化或出现新的情况 a new situation (used at the end of a sentence, or in the middle where there is a pause, to indicate a change, or sth. that has newly appeared) 1.指明已经出现或将要出现某种情况 to indicate that sth. has happened or will happen：下雨～ Xiàyǔ le. It's raining./ 明天就是星期日～ Míngtiān jiù shì xīngqīrì le. It will be Sunday tomorrow. 2.认识、想法、主张、行动等有变化 to indicate change in knowledge, thoughts, stand, action, etc.：我现在明白他的意思～ Wǒ xiànzài míngbai tā de yìsi le. I now understand (or know) what he meant./ 他今年暑假不回家～ Tā jīnnián shǔjià bù huíjiā le. He is not going home this summer vacation./ 我本来没打算去，后来还是去～ Wǒ běnlái méi dǎsuan qù, hòulái hái shì qù le. I didn't intend to go there at first, but later I went there anyway. 3.随假设的条件转移 to indicate change according to condition：你早来一天就见着他～ Nǐ zǎo lái yī tiān jiù jiànzhe tā le. You could have seen him if you had come here a day earlier. 4.催促或劝止 used in commands or requests in response to a changed situation：走～，走～，不能再等～ Zǒu le, zǒu le, bù néng zài děng le. Let's go. We can't wait any longer./ 算～，不要老说这些事～！ Suàn le, bùyào lǎo shuō zhèxiē shì le. That's enough! Let it go at that. (or Forget it!) liǎo |
