“五位一体”总体布局具体包括经济建设、政治建设、文化建设、社会建设、生态文明建设，由党的十八大报告正式提出。报告提出，“建设中国特色社会主义，总依据是社会主义初级阶段，总布局是五位一体，总任务是实现社会主义现代化和中华民族伟大复兴”，强调“要全面落实经济建设、政治建设、文化建设、社会建设、生态文明建设五位一体总体布局，促进现代化建设各方面相协调，促进生产关系与生产力、上层建筑与经济基础相协调，不断开拓生产发展、生活富裕、生态良好的文明发展道路”。强调生态文明建设，就使中国特色社会主义事业总体布局由原来的“四位一体”，进一步扩展为包括建设社会主义市场经济、社会主义民主政治、社会主义先进文化、社会主义和谐社会、社会主义生态文明在内的五位一体（罗文东等，2013：39）。“五位一体”大大丰富了“现代化”的理论体系，中国特色社会主义总体布局从十六大报告的“三位一体”（经济建设、政治建设、文化建设），到十七大报告的“四位一体”（经济建设、政治建设、文化建设和社会建设），再到“五位一体”，反映了中国共产党对社会主义建设认识的拓展和深化，也反映了中国共产党对“实现什么样的发展、怎样发展”这个根本问题的认识的深化。五位一体总布局与社会主义初级阶段总依据、实现社会主义现代化和中华民族伟大复兴总任务有机统一，对进一步明确中国特色社会主义发展方向，夺取中国特色社会主义新胜利意义重大，标志着中国社会主义现代化建设进入新的历史阶段，意味着中国进入二十一世纪后，从局部现代化到全面现代化，从不大协调的现代化到全面协调的现代化（五位一体.via：http://baike.baidu.com/item/%E4%BA%94%E4%BD%8D%E4%B8%80%E4%BD%93）。
