丝绸之路是汉代以来中西交通的大动脉，以长安为起点，西至地中海之滨。敦煌的地理位置扼丝路的咽喉要道，为中外客商的必经之地。

The Silk Road, an artery connecting the East and West since the Han Dynasty, started from the ancient capital of Chang’an (present-day Xi’An) and went all the way to the Mediterranean coast. With its strategic crossroads location on the ancient route, Dunhuang was a major stopping point for Chinese and foreign merchants.
