Zhuan (Speaking and Singing Performance)

通“啭”。本指婉转发声，引申为歌唱或说唱。唐五代有时把变文的演唱也简称为“转”。

The Chinese character zhuan (啭) originally means producing a melodious sound, and its meaning extends to refer to the speaking and singing of stories. During the Tang and Five Dynasties, the singing of stories known as bianwen texts was also simplified into zhuan.
