定义

社会经济结构是人类历史发展一定阶段上的经济基础，即一定的生产关系的总和。马克思在早期著作中曾借用18世纪英、法唯物论者使用的“市民社会”来表达上述意思（奚洁人，2007：477）。马克思在《〈政治经济学批判〉序言》中首次改用“社会经济结构”。他指出：“人们在自己生活的社会生产中发生一定的、必然的、不以他们的意志为转移的关系，即同他们的物质生产力的一定发展阶段相适合的生产关系。这些生产关系的总和构成社会的经济结构，即有法律的和政治的上层建筑竖立其上并有一定的社会意识形式与之相适应的现实基础”（马克思等，1995：32）。在整个社会结构中，社会经济结构是基础，政治法律制度以及与之相适应的社会意识形态是建立在社会经济结构基础之上的上层建筑。社会经济结构制约着社会生活、政治生活和精神生活，并决定着整个社会的面貌。因此，社会经济结构决定于生产力，有什么样的生产力，就有什么样的生产关系以及以此为基础的社会生活、政治生活和精神生活。社会经济结构是区分人类历史上不同社会经济形态的标准，也是区分同一社会经济形态不同发展阶段的标准。根据社会经济结构的质的规定性即生产关系的特征，人类社会可以区分为原始公社制、奴隶制、封建制、资本主义和共产主义的社会经济形态；根据同一社会经济结构的部分质变，同一社会经济形态内部又可区分为不同的发展阶段。例如，资本主义社会经济形态内部可以区分为自由竞争的资本主义阶段和垄断资本主义阶段；共产主义社会经济形态内部可以区分为低级阶段即社会主义社会和高级阶段即共产主义社会（廖盖隆，孙连成，陈有进等，1993：470）。此外，马克思在一些场合赋予社会经济结构更广泛的涵义。在《资本论》中他写道：“生产的承担者对自然的关系以及他们互相之间的关系，他们借以进行生产的各种社会关系的总和，就是从社会经济结构方面来看的社会”（马克思等，1956：925）。在这里，社会经济结构不仅包括生产关系方面的结构如所有制结构，而且包括生产力方面的结构，如部门结构、产业结构等（卢之超，1993：697）。
