“马克思关于社会发展或变革的思想是他的历史唯物主义思想内容中的一部分，它们共同在《<政治经济学批判>序言》这一文献中被马克思所描述”。社会的改变与革新，是在社会发展一定阶段，不同阶级以经济利益和政治利益为出发点，通过经济、政治、文化、司法、军事等不同手段进行的大规模的利益调整。社会变革的方式主要有自下而上的暴力革命和自上而下的温和渐进改良。导致社会变革的因素主要有两个，一个是现有社会结构和体制难以解决现实社会中的矛盾，必须通过制度性的变革来解决现实问题。另一个是人们对未来社会作出了构想，确立了社会变革的方向和目标。社会变革的发生必须同时具备以上两个因素。在马克思看来，生产力的发展对社会变革的发展起根本性的促进作用。生产力的发展使生产关系不再适应生产力的发展要求，就要求生产关系相应的做出调整以适应生产力的发展。这种调整的过程就是社会变革的过程，统治阶级自愿调整生产关系以适应生产力发展的方式就是渐进的改良，被统治阶级发动革命要求统治阶级变革生产关系就是暴力革命。在社会变革的主体方面，马克思认为社会变革的主体必然是现存生产方式的产物。资本主义生产方式产生了资产阶级和无产阶级两大对立阶级，无产阶级是新生产力的代表，只要资本主义社会性质不变，社会革命的主体就是无产阶级（杨长福等，2013：145-148）。
