定义

社会发展规律是指历史过程中各种社会现象之间内在的、本质的、必然的联系。马克思在《<政治经济学批判>序言》中对社会发展规律作了经典表述。他指出，物质生活的生产方式制约着整个社会生活、政治生活和精神生活过程。生产力和生产关系、经济基础和上层建筑的矛盾运动，是社会发展最深刻和最基本的动因。社会发展规律按其作用范围的大小和过程可区分为一般规律、特殊规律和个别规律。在社会发展的一切阶段都起作用的一般规律，如社会存在决定社会意识，生产关系一定要适合生产力发展状况，上层建筑一定要适合经济基础发展状况的规律等；在社会发展几个阶段或几种社会形态中起作用的规律是特殊规律，如商品生产规律，阶级斗争规律，国家与革命的规律等；仅在某一社会形态或某一社会领域起作用的特殊规律，如资本主义的剩余价值规律，社会主义的基本经济规律等。社会发展规律同自然规律一样，是物质形态运动的客观规律，是不以人的意志为转移的自然历史过程。但是，社会发展规律与自然规律是有区别的。恩格斯在说明社会规律的特点和它同自然界的规律的区别时写道：“社会发展史却有一点是和自然发展史根本不同的。在自然界中，（如果我们把人对自然界的反作用撇开不谈）全是不自觉的、盲目的动力，这些力量彼此发生作用，而一般规律就表现在这些动力的相互作用中，反之，在社会历史领域内进行活动的，全是具有意识的、经过思虑或凭激情行动的人；任何事情的发生都不是没有自觉的意图、没有预期目的的。但是，不管这个差别对于历史研究，尤其是对个别时代和个别事变的历史研究如何重要，它丝毫不能改变这样一个事实：历史进程是受内在的一般规律支配的”（马克思，恩格斯，1963：341）。社会发展规律是客观的，人们不能创造、改变或消灭它，但人们可以在实践中认识和掌握这些规律，在自己的行动中遵循和利用它们来改造社会。
