Painting the Eyes

画人的眸子，敦煌壁画向来重视点睛，其画法大致分为五种：黑墨点睛不分浓淡；淡墨画眼珠、浓墨点瞳孔；眼珠边缘勾轮廓线，黑眼珠内留白色瞳孔；墨线勾眼珠；墨点瞳孔。瞳孔内留出光点。

The pupils of the eyes are always the most important touches of mural paintings. The five commonly used methods are: 1. Black ink is used to paint the pupils, with no distinction between shades of color; 2. Lighter ink is used to paint the eyeballs, and dark ink is used to paint the pupils; 3. Black eyeballs are painted, with white used for the pupils and outline; 4. Black lines are used to draw the eyeballs; 5. Black ink is used to paint the pupils, with a light spot visible in the pupils.
