定义

思辨的历史哲学与“批判的历史哲学”相对。英国沃尔什在《历史哲学导论》中提出的术语。沃尔什认为，“历史”这一词的两可性为历史哲学同时打开了两个可能的领域，这两可性在于，“历史”可以表示（1）过去人类活动的全体，以及（2）我们现在用它们来构造的叙述和说明。正是基于这种两可性，对历史的研究就可以是针对历史事件的实际过程。或者是关注历史思维的过程，而靠历史思维，所达到的是第二种意义上的历史。对这两种“历史”的哲学研究分别可称为思辨的历史哲学和批判的历史哲学。根据沃尔什的划分，思辨的历史哲学属于形而上学，批判的历史哲学属于认识论。至于思辨的历史哲学，沃尔什认为，历史以如此方式成为哲学家的问题的原因，在于历史学的事实的明显的混乱性质（王雨辰等，2003：434）。这些历史事实散漫地偶然地联系在一起，其中看不到有什么计划或模式，哲学家对这些事实感到不可理解，只有逃避这些事实，在感到不能逃避它时，就只有编造出一种对这些历史事实的哲学解释，这就是黑格尔的历史哲学产生的原因。沃尔什还认为不能把黑格尔作为思辨历史哲学的创造者，因为圣经、神正论、奥古斯丁、康德均对这种思辨的历史哲学的形成做出过贡献。沃尔什还认为这种思辨的历史哲学是一种猜测的产物，是从外部去领会历史，但它同时也对历史研究做出了间接的贡献，因而它还可以继续存在和发展（金炳华，2001：1376）。
