Hulei Qin

忽雷琴二弦、二轴，左、右各一轴，琴体呈锥形，属琵琶类。《乐府杂录》:“文宗朝(公元827-840年)有内人郑中承善胡琴，内库二琵琶号大、小忽雷。”以此看来看来忽雷还有大、小之分。敦煌壁画上仅见一件忽雷琴出现在自鸣乐中，应属琵琶类，看来不十分流行，与史书记载情况基本吻合。

A plucked instrument, belonging to the pipa (lute) family, with two strings and two tuning pegs. Its body is conical. Collected Notes on Music reports: “During the reign of Emperor Wenzong (AD 827–840), an official of the lowest rank named Zheng Zhongcheng was good at playing the huqin. The man had two pipa he called large hulei [qin] and small hulei [qin].” Judging from such a statement, hulei qin may have come in different sizes. The only hulei qin found in the Dunhuang murals is among the self-sounding musical instruments. It also seems that the hulei qin was not very popular during the time, as indicated by contemporary historical records.
