定义

马克思主义诞生以前的哲学用来表述社会关系（狭义上特指财产关系、广义上指整个资产阶级社会）的一个术语。“市民社会”概念产生于18世纪。英国和法国唯物主义者的市民社会理论，其主要缺点在于不理解市民社会对生产的依赖关系，而用人的自然本性、政治使命、政体和立法的形式、道德等等来解释市民社会的形成。市民社会，即社会联系的总和，被理解为一种外在于个体的东西，一种使个体活动得以展开的“环境”。黑格尔把市民社会理解为建筑在私有制基础上的“需要体系”、财产关系、等级关系和法律关系等，从而猜测到社会发展的某些规律。但是，他把市民社会看成是从属于国家的东西，认为国家才是客观精神的真实形式。黑格尔的唯心主义颠倒了基础与上层建筑的关系。马克思在其早期著作中使用的市民社会概念，已经与旧哲学的市民社会术语具有完全不同的意义，可以被看作是社会存在概念的萌芽。马克思在1843年通过批判黑格尔的法哲学第一次使用了这一概念。他认为，要获得理解人类历史过程的锁钥，不应当到黑格尔描绘成“大厦之顶”的国家中去寻找，而应当到他所蔑视的“市民社会”中去寻找。不是国家决定市民社会，而是市民社会决定国家。国家与法根源于“市民社会”，即物质生活关系的总和。在这里，马克思已经把市民社会理解为家庭、等级和阶级的组织、财产和分配的关系，总之是理解为社会存在和社会活动的形式和方式，人们的实际生活和活动的形式和方式。马克思在其成熟的著作中科学地揭示了其市民社会概念的具体内容，把市民社会看作生产力和生产关系相统一的生产方式、经济基础，从而将社会存在确定为一个科学的范畴。马克思在《德意志意识形态》中指出：“在过去一切历史阶段上受生产力所制约、同时也制约生产力的交往形式，就是市民社会”（马克思等，1995：87-88）。“市民社会包括各个个人在生产力发展的一定阶段上的一切物质交往” （马克思等，1995：130）。“这个市民社会是全部历史的真正发源地和舞台”（马克思等，1995：88）。马克思在《〈政治经济学批判〉导言》一文中指出：“对市民社会的解剖应该到政治经济学中去寻求”（马克思等，1995：32）。后来，马克思用严密的科学概念（社会经济结构、经济基础、生产方式等）的体系代替了“市民社会”这个不够确切的术语（卢之超，1993：763）。
