莫高窟有两座，一是建于唐武周时期的北大像第96窟，此像高34.5米，二是建于盛唐开元天宝年间（713—756年）的南大像第130窟，大像高26米，窟顶高约30米。这些大像的制作都是依崖凿造出石胎，敷泥身再经彩绘而成。

There are two great Buddha grottoes among the Mogao Grottoes where huge statues are sculpted. One is Cave 96, the northern great Buddha grotto with a statue 34.5 meters high, built in the Wuzhou years of the Tang Dynasty, and the other is Cave 130, the southern grand statue grotto with a statue 26 meters high and the cave 30 meters high, built in the Tianbao years of the Kaiyuan Period of the High Tang era(713-756 AD). These large images were outlined according to the shape of the rock cliffs and then clay figures were sculpted depending on the rocks and finally the figures were painted with colors.
