A French sinologist and orientalist. Between 1906 and 1908 he traveled far to the Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang. He chose manuscripts not found in Buddhist scriptures—manuscripts containing notes and inscriptions—and manuscripts written in languages other than Chinese and unethically purchased at low prices a very large number of valuable documents that were kept in the library cave, as well as silk paintings and textiles not bought already by Stein. These collections were then transported to Paris.
