德国哲学家康德的哲学用语。他认为，在人的意识之外有独立存在的“自在之物”，但人的认识能力只能达到“现象”，这就是知识的此岸性。如果人们的认识能力非要超出“现象”，去认识“自在之物”，则是不可能的，这就是知识的彼岸性。在他看来，此岸的“现象”和彼岸的“自在之物”之间存在着不可逾越的鸿沟，人们只能认识“现象”，不可能透过“现象”去认识“自在之物”，“自在之物”不可能变成“为我之物”，“现象”和“自在之物”是绝对对立的。他的错误在于把“现象”看成是主观的感觉表象，它不表现“自在之物”的任何性质，那么，人们就不可能透过“现象”去把握“自在之物”。实际上，客观世界无所谓彼岸和此岸，现象是本质的表现，而本质也一定要表现出来，认识了现象，就可以透过现象去掌握事物的本质，不可认识的“自在之物”是不存在的（彭克宏，1989：39）。马克思在《关于费尔巴啥的提纲》中借用“此岸性”一词，只是为了说明思维能够透过事物的现象认识其本质。客观世界根本不存在“彼岸”，世界上也没有什么事物是不可认识的，实践驳斥了康德的不可知论（张宝琪，1988：429）。
