1.退 step back ( comb. 退- tuì- retreat)：望而～步 wàng'ér quèbù shrink back at the sight of (sth. dangerous or difficult)/ 打得敌人连夜退～ Dǎ de dírén liányè tuìquè. We inflicted such heavy casualties on the enemy that they retreated before the night was out.
2.退还，不受 decline; refuse：盛情难～ shèngqíng-nánquè It would be ungracious not to accept your invitation.
3.和“去”、“掉”用法相近 remove; get rid of：了～一件心事 liǎoquè yī jiàn xīnshì It has settled a matter weighing on my mind./ 失～力量 shīquè lìliɑng lose strength
4.副词,表示转折 adv. but; yet：这个道理大家都明白，他～不知道 Zhè ge dàoli dàjiā dōu míngbɑi, tā què bù zhīdào. When everybody understands it, he does not. |
