1.跟介词“于”加代词“是”相当 Same as preposition yú plus pronoun shì：心不在～ xīnbùzàiyān absent-minded/ 罪莫大～ zuìmòdàyān the most deadly crime
2.乃，才 then; unless：必知疾之所自起，～能攻之 Bì zhī jí zhī suǒ zì qǐ, yān néng gōng zhī. You have to know how the trouble arises before you can deal with it.
3.表示疑问，怎么，哪儿 interj. how; where：～能如此 Yān néng rúcǐ? How can it be like that?/ 其子～往 Qí zǐ yān wǎng? Where has his son gone?
