佛教语。佛教认为南赡部洲等四大部洲之外，有铁围山，周匝如轮，故名。

In Sanskrit, the term means ring of mountains. In Buddhism, it refers to the eight ranges of metallic mountains that are presumed in Buddhist cosmology to surround the world system of the sensuous realm and thus are sometimes to designate the entire universe or world system.
