通过暴力使直接生产者与生产资料相分离，由此使货币财富迅速集中于少数人手中的历史过程。这个过程发生在资本及与之相适应的生产方式形成前的历史阶段，所以称为“原始积累”。它是资本主义生产方式的前提和起点，对农民土地的剥夺，形成整个原始积累的基础。对于这个概念的理解，应从以下几个方面去认识：
（1）新兴的资产阶级和新贵族用暴力的手段迫使小生产者同生产资料相分离并积累资本。它一方面使社会生产资料集中到少数人手里，另一方面又使大批生产者转化为雇佣工人，为资本主义生产方式准备了前提条件。而这一点体现在英国的圈地运动尤为明显。
（2）用武力征服殖民地，抢劫金银财富、贩卖奴隶等手段来聚敛财富。比如整个十六世纪的三角贸易。
（3）资本积累不同于资本原始积累。通过剥削工人的剩余价值而积累的过程叫资本积累，而原始积累的方式主要是掠夺（马克思等，1972：289）。
