“表征”是哲学显现人类关于自身存在的自我意识的独特方式。孙正聿教授在1997年的《社会科学战线》上发表了《论哲学的表征意义》一文，首次将“表征”作为语言的特殊职能与语言的“表述”和“表达”的职能区别开来，他以卡尔纳普对传统哲学的批判的前提——区分语言的“表述”和“表达”职能——为前提对哲学的“表征”意义展开了精彩的论述，集中地阐释了存在的意义是人类关于自身存在的自我意识，哲学的“表征”职能由此实现。“表征”概念的提出及对其有力的论证是对哲学的职能的切中要害的澄清。他认为，哲学“表征”的特殊性及其独特价值就根源于人类存在的特殊方式——人作为能意识到自身存在和能反思自身存在的特殊存在，不断追问自身存在的意义，这既是人类理论理性的永无止境的寻求，又是人类实践理性的独一无二的根基。而哲学作为人类把握存在的一种基本方式，根源于人类的理论理性对存在意义的这种不懈追求和存在意义的实践理性的永恒支撑。“存在的意义既不是以语言的‘表述’职能来陈述的经验事实（因此存在的意义并不是科学的对象），也不是以语言的‘表达’职能来传递的情感或意愿（因此，理论理性对存在意义的寻求以及存在的意义对实践理性的支撑并不是以文学艺术的方式来实现）。哲学是关于意义的自我意识的理论表征，‘表征’是哲学显现人类关于自身存在的自我意识的独特方式，而不是与‘表述’和‘表达’相对待的一种语言职能。哲学并不是以某种特殊的语言职能来实现自己对世界的独特把握，而是以自己的把握世界的独特方式使哲学话语系统获得特殊的意义”（孙正聿，1997：246）。
