与时俱进是马克思主义不断创新发展的特性。江泽民在《庆祝中国共产党成立八十周年大会上的讲话》中指出：“马克思主义具有与时俱进的理论品质”，“如果不顾历史条件和现实情况的变化，拘泥于马克思主义经典作家在特定历史条件下、针对具体情况做出的某些个别论断和具体行动纲领，我们就会因为思想脱离实际而不能顺利前进，甚至发生失误。这就是我们为什么必须始终反对以教条主义的态度对待马克思主义理论的道理所在”。既要坚持马克思主义的科学原理和科学精神，又要善于把握客观情况的变化，善于总结人民群众在实践中创造的新鲜经验，不断丰富和发展马克思主义理论。任何真理都是绝对性和相对性的统一。把握真理的绝对性的相对性统一的原理，对于正确对待马克思主义有重要意义。马克思主义是科学是真理，它也是绝对性和相对性的统一。它正确地反应了自然、社会和思维发展的普遍规律，是经过一百五十多年的实践证实了的真理，因而它有绝对性的一面。但是，马克思主义并没有穷尽一切事物和规律，仍然需要随着社会实践的发展而发展，它又具有相对性的面。正是因为马克思主义真理具有绝对性，所以必须以马克思主义作为我们事业的指导思想，又因为它具有相对性，所以又必须在实践中丰富它、发展它。江泽民在中共十六大报告中强调：“与时俱进，就是党的全部理论和工作要体现时代性，把握规律性，富于创造性”（余源培，2004：631）。
