自由贸易区（Free Trade Area）是指两个或两个以上的国家通过达成某种协定或条约取消相互之间的关税和与关税具有同等效力的其他措施的国际经济一体化组织。它除了具有自由港的大部分特点外，还可以吸引外资设厂，发展出口加工企业，允许和鼓励外资设立大的商业企业、金融机构等促进区内经济综合、全面地发展。自由贸易区的局限在于，它会导致商品流向的扭曲和避税。如果没有其他措施作为补充，第三国很可能将货物先运进一体化组织中实行较低关税或贸易壁垒的成员国，然后再将货物转运到实行高贸易壁垒的成员国。为了避免出现这种商品流向的扭曲，自由贸易区组织均制订“原产地原则”，规定只有自由贸易区成员国的“原产地产品”才享受成员国之间给予的自由贸易待遇。理论上，凡是制成品在成员国境内生产的价值额占到产品价值总额的50%以上时，该产品应视为原产地产品。一般而言，第三国进口品越是与自由贸易区成员国生产的产品相竞争，对成员国境内生产品的增加值含量越高。原产地原则的涵义表明了自由贸易区对非成员国的某种排他性。现实中比较典型的自由贸易区是北美自由贸易区。目前这种区域性安排不仅包括货物贸易自由化，而且涉及服务贸易、投资、政府采购、知识产权保护、标准化等更多领域的相互承诺，是一个国家实施多双边合作战略的手段。（自由贸易区.via: http://wiki.mbalib.com/wiki/%E8%87%AA%E7%94%B1%E8%B4%B8%E6%98%93%E5%8C%BA）
