日本人，毕业于东京帝国大学史学科。1909年后任教于京都大学，1924年起为教授，曾任校长，后当选为日本学士院会员。参与整理大谷收集品。其研究范围涉及西域历史、语言、宗教以及唐、元等朝断代史等方面，是日本第一位兼通西域民族古文字的史家。

A Japanese scholar. He graduated from the department of history at the Tokyo Imperial University. In 1909 he began to teach at Kyoto University and he became a professor in 1924. Later he was appointed as the rector of Kyoto University and became a member of the Japan Academy. He participated in categorizing and organizing the Otani collections. His research fields included the history, languages, and religions of the Western Regions, as well as the history of the Tang and Yuan Dynasties. He was the first Japanese historian who had a strong knowledge of the ancient languages of ethnic groups in the Western Regions.
