社会主体是主体的具体形式之一，也称主体的社会总体形态，可以结合“个人主体”与“集体主体”来理解。它与“个人主体”与“集体主体”不同，不是仅仅指某一特定方面，而是指以一定地域中不同的集团和个人所组成的社会整体作为活动的主体，共同认识和改造它所面对的客体。在阶级社会内，社会主体的形成和存在是有条件的。因为，存在于同一种经济形态内的个人与个人、集团与集团之间总是存在着某种差别，有时甚至在利益、意志和活动中形成尖锐的对立和斗争。但是，只要某个社会还没有因为内部的对抗发生剧烈的外部冲突，它就总要在一定的意义和程度上使自己以社会总体的形式从事某些实践或认识的活动。这个内部包含着不同阶级、集团和个人的社会总体，就是社会主体的活动和存在形式（孙国华,1997）。社会主体是以一个整体的面目出现，在社会中不同的主体、利益集团因为各种共同利益或某种矛盾而产生各种各样的联系。所以，在理解社会主体的时候要注意了解不同地域中不同的集体、个人，认识整个社会作为主体所要面临的客体。
