定义

知识社会学是研究知识(思想)与社会(文化)之间的关系的社会学。其特征是既说明知识(思想)对社会(文化)的控制作用，也说明思想对社会的依赖关系。由德国社会学家曼海姆提出。他认为知识或思想经常形成一种社会历史过程，它既能巩固现存的社会秩序，也能推动社会变迁。知识虽可以产生一定的社会效果，但不是脱离社会而存在的。知识或思想有其社会根源，受到社会的制约。指出意识形态与乌托邦不同，认为意识形态以一种主观的虚幻的思想、观念、意志取向作为社会的规范，是一种巩固现有秩序的保守趋向，乌托邦则以一种虚构的理论作为鼓动人们争取的目标，有推动社会变革的作用。曼海姆对历史的发展持悲观主义的观点，认为现在西方社会处于危机之中，意识形态与乌托邦的思想中与社会现实不相符合或超越现实的思想因素趋于衰落和消失，人们的思想满足于现实，没有理想。认为这种情况在文学艺术上的反映是人文主义的没落，在政治上的反映是将政治还原于经济，排斥文化的理想，否定历史，迷恋现实的享受等。20世纪下半叶以来，知识社会学逐渐偏重于研究知识本身，特别是研究科学技术知识对社会的影响和知识系统的各种作用。（金炳华，2003：432）。
