定义

理想是“人们在实践中形成的、有可能实现的、对未来社会和自身发展的向往和追求，是人们世界观、人生观、价值观在奋斗目标上的集中体现”（本书编写组，2009：21）。理想具有以下特点：（1）实践性，所谓实践性是说，理想是在实践的基础上产生的，理想的目的就是把它变成现实，但只有经过实践才能把它由想象变成现实。（2）现实性，现实是理想的基础，只有建立在现实的基础之上，理想才具有实现的可能性，否则就不称其为理想。（3）超越性，理想虽然建立在现实的基础之上，但理想又是对现实的超越：一方面是未来对现实的超越，一方面是美好对不足的超越。（4）时代性，不同时代的理想不同，这是由生产力发展水平决定的。根据不同的划分标准，理想分为不同种类。按照人和社会的关系来说，有个人理想和社会理想，个人理想是一个人基于自己的实际而为自己确立的奋斗目标；社会理想有两种理解：一是个人对社会发展的向往和追求，一是社会对未来的追求目标。按照时限的长短，理想可以有长远理想和近期理想，长远理想是经过很长时间才能实现的奋斗目标，近期理想是最近就能实现或者短期内追求实现的目标。按照性质考虑，理想有崇高理想和庸俗理想，崇高理想是符合社会发展规律，代表人类发展趋势并代表人类利益的理想是崇高理想，庸俗理想是指仅仅从自我角度考虑和仅仅追求物质享受的目标是庸俗理想（王柏棣，2012：6-9）。
