敦煌境内有300多华里的汉长城遗址。沿长城有烽燧70余座，大多是底宽上窄的方柱体，由土坯夹柴草筑成，原为报警而修筑。从遗址推断，敦煌烽燧既是瞭望台，又是商旅过往的给养站。

They are 300 li ruins of the Great Wall of the Han Dynasty still in existence in Dunhuang. There are over 70 beacon towers along the Wall, most of which are quadrate pillars, larger at the bottom but smaller at the top, made of adobes and faggots. The towers are originally built for giving alarms, but judging from the ruins, the beacon towers in Dunhuang used to function not only as lookout towers but also as feeding stations for trade caravans travelling along.
